Telomerase inhibitor

Mechanism

Binds directly to the RNA component of telomerase (hTR) to inhibit enzymatic activity, suppressing expansion of malignant hematopoietic clones.

Approved Indication

Treatment of adult patients with low- to intermediate-1-risk myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) with transfusion-dependent anemia requiring 4 or more red blood cell units over 8 weeks who have not responded to or are ineligible for erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs).

What This Means For Patients

Rytelo (imetelstat) is a first-in-class oligonucleotide telomerase inhibitor indicated for patients with lower-risk transfusion-dependent myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). It targets malignant progenitor cells to restore healthy blood production. It is available under the special-import policy in the Hainan Boao Lecheng pilot zone.
